When there is a need to simply and quickly create an interesting interior, textured wallpaper comes to the rescue. They differ from ordinary smooth ones by the presence of a relief surface. Depending on the type of wallpaper and production technology, the nature of the pattern can vary significantly. Some wallpapers are sold already painted, others require painting after installation, but in any case, the three-dimensional pattern on the walls will make it possible to bring original ideas to life, and even mask some wall flaws. What needs to be considered when choosing textured wallpaper, gluing and painting them, so that the resulting surface meets expectations and is a decoration of the room?
The main types of textured wallpaper
It is impossible to talk about the general properties, advantages and disadvantages of textured wallpaper, because this is a collective concept, which is understood as several types of wallpaper with a relief. The manufacture and creation of a three-dimensional surface are different for them, therefore the properties are different. At the moment, textured wallpapers are among paper, vinyl, non-woven wallpapers, glass wallpapers, as well as linkrust wallpapers.
Paper textured wallpaper
The simplest and most familiar to many of us, paper wallpaper can be textured, and a relief pattern can be created in different ways:
embossing wallpaper consisting of two or three layers of paper. Three-layer ones are more expensive, they are more rigid, so they allow you to hide small wall defects. Such wallpapers can be impregnated with a water-repellent composition, due to which they get another valuable property – the possibility of painting;
coarse-fiber wallpaper is produced using wood chips or other natural raw materials, a layer of which is located between two layers of paper. The drawing turns out to be chaotic, and this is precisely its beauty. In addition, such wallpapers have good strength and durability;
foam wallpaper – two-layer paper wallpaper, on the outside of which a pattern is applied from acrylic foamed under the influence of high temperatures.
The assortment of paper wallpapers, without exaggeration, is huge, they are easy to install, environmentally friendly and relatively inexpensive, but in rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bathroom) and an increased risk of damage (hallway) it is better not to use them.
Vinyl Textured Wallpaper
The relief of vinyl wallpaper is created by cold or hot stamping. The drawing can be absolutely anything: from flowers and patterns to imitation of textiles, metal, stone or brick. Such a variety allows you to equip a room in any desired style, and thanks to the most voluminous drawings, you can even mask cracks and other irregularities on the walls.
Vinyl wallpapers are produced on paper and non-woven backing. The latter is preferable, because it provides higher durability, strength and ease of gluing. In addition to its excellent appearance, textured vinyl wallpaper has a host of other advantages, including higher resistance to moisture and even the ability to wash the surface of the material, no shrinkage, and resistance to sunlight. The only drawback is airtightness, so the room will either have to be intensively ventilated, or use such wallpaper to decorate one or two walls.
Non-woven textured wallpaper
This type of coating is made of several layers of non-woven fabric, the top one can have a three-dimensional pattern. Most often, embossed non-woven wallpaper requires further staining, and the paint allows you to make the volumetric pattern more durable. Depending on the depth of the relief, the number of possible paint layers differs and in some cases can reach up to 10, but it is worth remembering that each subsequent layer makes the drawing less voluminous and pronounced. As a rule, textured non-woven wallpaper is sold in white.
Non-woven wallpaper is easy to stick, it does not stretch and does not tear, maintainable, breathable, does not fade in the sun, is fire-resistant and easy to clean.
Glass fiber is a unique material in many ways. It is produced from glass melted and stretched into threads, from which a single piece is woven. Special impregnations allow you to get rid of excessive fragility. Glass fiber always has a three-dimensional pattern, however, it does not differ in particular pretentiousness: these are waves, circles, a herringbone, a rhombus, etc. Manufacturers of this finishing material are constantly replenishing their collections with new designs.
When choosing glass fiber wallpaper, you need to pay attention to the depth of the relief, which directly depends on how many times this material can be repainted. Fiberglass wallpapers are sold often colorless, so you can paint them in any desired shade. However, pre-painted materials are also available on the market and can be repainted in the future.
Glass fiber easily tolerates high humidity, they can even be washed and cleaned, they are durable, durable, non-combustible, can not only hide small wall defects, but even strengthen them. The unique properties of the material allow it to be used even in bathrooms.
Liquid textured wallpaper
Liquid wallpaper, due to the presence of cellulose, silk or cotton fibers in them, also allows you to create an interesting relief surface, which can be compared with the effect of using decorative plaster, because even according to the principle of application, these materials are identical. Thanks to the components of the ready-made mixture, which only needs to be diluted with water before use, a certain shade, shine or mother of pearl is obtained. For a more embossed surface, you can use a gun to apply the mixture.
One of the significant advantages of liquid wallpaper is the ability to create a seamless surface. The structure of the material makes it easy to mask even a few pits and cracks. Moreover, this finishing material is air permeable, has good heat and sound insulation properties.
These wallpapers always have a relief surface, which is the value and main feature of the material. The basis of the material is paper, and the pattern is formed from a mixture of wood flour, chalk, wax, rosin and some other components, it is embossed with special stamping rollers. As a rule, the material is beige in color, and with the help of staining following installation, a delightful decorative effect can be achieved. Such wallpapers with many fancy curls or fancy ornaments are used to decorate individual areas in a room, but are not used to decorate the entire room.
A distinctive feature of this finishing material is the ability to grow stronger over the years. In addition, it is an eco-friendly, breathable material, resistant to mechanical damage and easy to clean.
Textured wallpaper design
The relief of textured wallpaper can be implemented in the form of curls and patterns, be chaotic when it is formed by sawdust, or imitate the surface of other materials. Brick wallpaper looks great, which fit into loft, modern or country interiors. Such material can be used to decorate a separate area, protrusions or niches, one of the walls in the room. Wallpaper with imitation of a wood surface will perfectly fit into the Provence style, and imitation of plaster is suitable for classic interiors. Also used wallpapers stylized as stone, leather, animal skins.
When decorating an apartment with textured wallpaper, the main thing is to know when to stop and follow simple rules:

- it is better not to use textures of different types in the same room;
- interesting effects can be achieved by using textured wallpaper in the decoration of the lower or upper part of the wall or by framing fragments of such wallpaper with decorative moldings;

Designers advise using textured wallpaper with a slightly noticeable texture in the bedroom so as not to burden the rest space. In the living room, you can give free rein to imagination, but in the hallway and in the working area of the kitchen, textured wallpaper is inappropriate, since it is more difficult to remove dirt from bulk elements.
Sticking textured wallpaper
Decorating the interior with textured wallpaper is quite easy, and you can do it yourself. The installation process is as follows:
surface preparation. The old coating must be removed first. Despite the fact that textured wallpaper can hide individual wall defects, it is better to get rid of large cracks and pits before gluing and level the surface. Small defects and irregularities can be corrected with putty, larger ones with plaster, and in the most advanced cases, drywall is used;
marking the wall or part of it. This step is optional, but desirable to facilitate the installation process and improve the final result. From the corner of the room or other place where the wallpapering will begin, a segment equal to the width of the canvas is set aside. A vertical line is laid along it with the help of a level, from which the width of the roll is again measured and the procedure is repeated;
cutting wallpaper. Taking into account the height of the wall and adding a few centimeters to the allowances, fragments of the wallpaper are cut. It will not be superfluous to first measure the height of the ceiling in different places in order to properly cut the wallpaper. On the packaging, the manufacturer usually indicates how many centimeters must be left for the allowance for joining the pattern. The larger the drawing, the more waste there will be when gluing, which should be taken into account when buying. It is best to cut glass fiber in personal protective equipment, as tiny glass particles can enter the respiratory tract. After cutting, the linkrust wallpaper is rolled into rolls and soaked in hot water, then left to dry for 10 hours;
preparation of glue. For each type of wallpaper, it is better to use a special glue, for glass wallpaper, glue designed for vinyl wallpaper is also suitable, for linkrust wallpaper, glue is prepared on the basis of flour paste and wood glue;
glue can be applied to the wallpaper itself or to the wall. After applying glue to paper wallpaper, it is left for 5 minutes for impregnation; when gluing non-woven and glass wallpaper, the glue is applied to the wall. Vinyl wallpaper is mounted depending on the type of base, the details are indicated on the package, and when installing linkrust wallpaper, the wall and the material itself are lubricated with glue;

Textured wallpaper is glued end-to-end, the wallpaper joints are rolled with a roller. After gluing, the linkrust wallpaper is additionally fixed with a wooden strip, after removing which the holes are putty;
- after drying, the excess wallpaper is cut off with a spatula and a knife.
Liquid wallpaper is prepared from a special mixture by adding water and applied to a previously prepared surface, like ordinary plaster, with a spatula, float or spray gun.
Painting textured wallpaper
When the wallpaper is completely dry, you can proceed to painting. The process is simple and does not differ from ordinary wall painting. You just need to prepare a paint of a certain shade or tint a sufficient mass in advance and start working. It is better to apply it with a roller in order to better paint over the embossed wallpaper pattern. Each subsequent layer of paint is applied after the previous one has dried, until the desired shade is achieved. Textured wallpaper allows you to experiment with combining paint of different colors, thereby emphasizing the unique pattern of the material.
For non-woven wallpaper, water-dispersion paints are suitable, for glass wallpaper – compositions that are resistant to washing, incl. acrylic and latex paints, for linkrust wallpapers – oil, acrylic paints, as well as wax paste.
