A bedroom is a room in which coziness and comfort should always reign. If you want to change something in this room, carry out cosmetic or major repairs, you need to clearly understand what should be the result, and based on this, draw up a work plan and an estimate. It is important that the procedure is thought out to the smallest detail, and then the repair can be carried out as soon as possible, and the result will be exactly what it was supposed to be. That is why you need to know what the main stages of bedroom renovation are, and what is the sequence of work.
Before proceeding to drawing up a plan and carrying out repair work, it is necessary to assess the condition of the bedroom and think for yourself what should happen in the end. Based on this, they determine the type of upcoming repair: cosmetic or major. Redecoration provides for the replacement of finishing materials without any large-scale transformations. Overhaul already includes replacement of electrical wiring, erection or demolition of partitions, replacement of windows and doors. Based on what type of repair is selected, the list of required work will differ.
Whatever the scale of the renovation, first of all, it is necessary to draw up its design project. And in order to do this correctly, it is important to first take measurements: the length, width and height of the bedroom, the dimensions of the window and door openings, the distance from the walls to the doors and windows. If there are arches or any other architectural elements, their main parameters must also be measured, so that they can then be taken into account when drawing up a project.
There are several ways to develop a project for a future bedroom. The simplest one available to each of us is a freehand drawing with a scale. You can work a little and master a simple program, and then you can imagine the interior of the bedroom in three-dimensional form. Many of these programs are very simple and can easily be learned in a couple of hours. An alternative option is to entrust the development of the project to an experienced designer who can take into account all your wishes.
The bedroom project should give as complete an idea as possible about the future placement of furniture and lighting fixtures, about decor items, about the color scheme of the bedroom. When planning your future interior, it is important not to use too much furniture, especially if the room is small. For free movement around the bedroom, it is important to leave passages with a width of at least 80 cm.
As for the choice of interior style, it is important to start not only from your own preferences, but also from the characteristics of the room. So, if the bedroom is small, then the best style is minimalism or high-tech. Such a room assumes the use of only the most necessary items in it, the room will not be cluttered, and therefore, it will be perceived as more free. For spacious bedrooms, you can choose absolutely any style: from the always fashionable classics to Provence, boho or country.
If major repairs are planned, then it would be nice to draw on the plan the location of the electrical wiring, new partitions, arches, etc. Based on the project, the sequence of works is determined and the estimate is calculated. Also at this stage, you need to decide which stages of work can be carried out independently, and which ones are better to entrust to specialists.
Preparing the bedroom for renovation
If the repair is major, then all the furniture and appliances need to be taken out of the bedroom, and even when carrying out cosmetic repairs, it is better to free the room from all things, and those that are difficult to take out should be covered tightly with foil. Now you can start dismantling unnecessary partitions, if planned, and old finishes.
First, it is better to remove the floor plinth, then proceed with the removal of all finishing materials. Most often, wallpaper is used in the bedroom: they can be easily removed with a spatula, and if difficulties arise, they can be wetted. To remove paint from the surface of walls or ceilings, it is better to use solvents, but you need to work with them very carefully. If the ceiling was just whitewashed, then you have to tinker a little: first, wash off the material with warm water, then remove the top layer with a spatula, and then wash off the remnants with a damp sponge.
As a rule, there are no problems with dismantling the floor covering: linoleum, laminate and parquet, which are usually used in a given room, are removed quite simply.
Installation of electrical wiring
Once you’ve gotten rid of all the old trim, it’s time to replace the electrical wiring, if this is part of your plans. You need to rely on the drawn up lighting plan in the bedroom and the location of the equipment in it. You need to decide in advance what type of lighting will be used, whether sconces or floor lamps will be installed, where it is better to place the sockets. If at this stage you show negligence and frivolity, then in the future you may encounter great inconveniences and, at least, the constant need to use extension cords.
The elements of the old electrical wiring in the wall must be insulated, and the new cable must be laid clearly along vertical and horizontal lines. It is better to lay the wiring in the grooves, and then draw up a cable diagram – in the future it will be much easier to carry out any repair and construction work.
After the old finish has been dismantled, it is impossible to immediately start finishing work, because the surfaces are far from perfect. A plaster mix is suitable for leveling the walls: it is better to level their entire surface with it, although some experts allow the use of the composition only in places with the deepest cracks. An alternative to dirty and relatively lengthy plastering work is leveling the walls with drywall, by the way, it is not necessary to choose moisture-resistant drywall for the bedroom. Its installation is quick and clean, and the result is a perfectly flat surface, suitable for any further finishing. The only negative is a reduction in the usable area, so this option is not very suitable for a small bedroom.
It is better to repair cracks in the ceiling with plaster mortar, and then clean and prime. If you plan to paint or whitewash the ceiling, then you need to approach its preparation very carefully – the surface should be perfect. If defects on the ceiling are such that it will take a lot of time and effort to eliminate them, then tension and suspended structures can be used.
Now for the floor. In any case, it should be perfectly flat. A cement-sand screed is performed, and if there is one already, but there are still significant irregularities, then a thin layer of self-leveling floor can be used. For the bedroom, you can provide a system of underfloor heating in order to get out of bed in winter as comfortable as possible. It is better not to lay a warm floor under the furniture, therefore it is so important to determine in advance as accurately as possible what and where will stand.
Often at this stage, the replacement of windows and doors is also performed, if this is provided for by the project. To protect new structures from dirt during subsequent repairs, they are covered with foil and masking tape.
Finishing work in the bedroom, as in any other room, starts from the ceiling so as not to stain other surfaces. The only exceptions are tension structures, in which practically no debris and dirt are formed. Many different materials are suitable for finishing the ceiling. This can be the usual whitewashing or painting. Water-based paints are used, which can have any desired shade. A great alternative is to use decorative plaster. The process of applying it is laborious, but such a finish will be inexpensive, and it will not be very difficult to refresh it. The use of slabs that are glue-mounted to the ceiling is not the best idea, albeit the most budgetary one. Such material practically does not allow air to pass through, which means that it will not contribute to maintaining an optimal microclimate in the apartment.
An excellent option for the ceiling in the bedroom is suspended or tension structures. With them, you can make a multi-level ceiling, provide for effective spot lighting. The downside of such structures is that they take away a little room height.
Many of us traditionally choose wallpaper for wall decoration. Paper, although full of different colors and pleasing with low prices, are in less demand, because they quickly fade. A good option is vinyl wallpaper, but it is better to choose those that are able to breathe, and they are much more expensive than usual. Non-woven wallpapers and paintable wallpapers are also great, because with them you can change the interior many times. You can bring coziness to the bedroom with the help of fabric wallpaper, and you can add some chic and shine with the help of metallized wallpaper.
Decorative plaster is perfect for walls in the bedroom, incl. Venetian, which will be a good background for the classic interior of the room. If you want to make the bedroom as warm and cozy as possible, you can use wood panels for wall decoration. For one of the walls, you can use photo wallpapers that effectively enlarge even small bedrooms, and lay out the headboard with a decorative stone. The color of the walls can be any at the discretion of the owners, but still psychologists and designers recommend using calm shades in this room.
Considering that there are not as many people walking in the bedroom as in other rooms, and there are practically no guests here, for finishing the floor you can use materials with not the highest wear resistance, but put the appearance of the coating in the first place. In addition, it is important to take into account that people often go barefoot in the bedroom, so the warm surface of the flooring is an obvious plus.
The carpet perfectly meets all the requirements of the bedroom, which is very soft to the touch, warm and gives an atmosphere of coziness to the bedroom, but a lot of dust collects in it. Parquet and cork are also great for the bedroom: they are natural, beautiful and pleasant to the touch. An alternative to expensive parquet is laminate, with which you can use the underfloor heating system. In addition, linoleum is often used to decorate a bedroom – the most affordable material that can perfectly imitate wood of any species.
After installing the floor covering, you can install skirting boards and moldings, and then ceiling and wall lamps provided for by the project.
Furniture should be given special attention when arranging your bedroom. It should be comfortable, safe, fit into the created interior and fit the size of the room.
For the bedroom, you need to provide a double bed, as well as a wardrobe, if the apartment does not have a separate dressing room. You also need to purchase bedside tables, the convenience and importance of which, perhaps, is even unnecessary to explain. If necessary, you need to provide a dressing table or chest of drawers, a mirror and a TV. Many experts say that there is no place for technology in the bedroom, and it is better to refuse the TV by transferring it to the living room, but in practice it turns out that almost everyone uses the TV in the bedroom. It can be installed on a chest of drawers or hung on brackets.
After all the equipment items are purchased and placed in their places, you can install non-stationary lighting items: floor lamps, table lamps, etc. At this stage, you can also decorate the room with accessories: curtains and bed linen can also become them along with various photos and paintings, vases and figurines, candles and flowers. The main thing is to observe the measure and not to litter the bedroom with useless little things, especially if the room is already small.
It is important to adhere to a uniform style when choosing finishes, furniture and accessories. Then it will turn out to create a harmonious space that is conducive to relaxation. It is equally important to follow a pre-drawn bedroom project that will help you at all stages of the renovation. By the way, it is also important not to overdo it with the amount of furniture, and bright colors, huge chandeliers and mirror surfaces of the ceiling and walls are far from always appropriate.
Renovation in the bedroom is not as bad as it seems. Most of the work can be done on your own, provided you have minimal experience, and their sequence will determine the design project, which is important to draw up even before the start of the repair. A clear idea of how you see your bedroom in the future, and what work needs to be done, will help you achieve the desired result.
