Metallic wallpaper appeared relatively recently on the building materials market, but it is already in deserved demand. They are incredibly beautiful, they are cast in silver, gold or bronze, they can have absolutely any pattern or embossing. They bring additional light into the room, visually expand the space, and are distinguished by a mass of positive performance characteristics. What are the advantages of metallic wallpaper, how to choose and glue them correctly?

Metallic wallpaper, or metallized, consists of two layers of material: the first is paper or non-woven, the second is aluminum foil. The foil can be either smooth or have some kind of pattern, embossing, a certain color, etc.

Benefits of metallic wallpaper

Metal wallpaper has a huge number of advantages, thanks to which they are becoming more and more popular and in demand:

  1. metallic wallpaper selectiona unique appearance that immediately distinguishes this finishing material from the mass of others. This wallpaper fits perfectly into the interior in any style: from high-tech to classics. Moreover, due to its reflective properties, such wallpapers are able to slightly increase the space, which is important for small rooms;

  2. resistance to ultraviolet rays: under the sun’s rays, metal wallpaper does not fade and does not lose its original appearance;

  3. such a coating is quite easy to care for: you can just wash it regularly to keep it beautiful and shiny;
  4. metal wallpaper is an excellent sound insulator, so the apartment will become a little quieter;
  5. this type of coating, due to the presence of aluminum foil, protects households from the negative influence of power lines;
  6. metallic wallpaper selectionin installation, this type of coating is also quite simple, and the principle of gluing does not differ in any way from the installation of paper or non-woven wallpaper;

  7. metal wallpapers are absolutely not afraid of moisture, so they can be washed with a damp sponge and used in rooms with high humidity;
  8. the coating is not afraid of fungus, mold, the influence of other pests, which means it will serve you for many years;
  9. the durability of such wallpaper is 10-15 years.

Disadvantages of metallic wallpaper

Like any other finishing material, metal wallpaper has some disadvantages:

  1. metallic wallpaper selectionthe high price is the main disadvantage. Such a coating is more expensive than paper or vinyl wallpaper, but its appearance is also special, and its durability is at a height, so the price is quite justified;

  2. the need to carefully level the surface for applying such wallpaper, since the coating itself is very thin, and every hole and crack on the wall will be clearly visible;

  3. due to its structure, metal wallpaper does not breathe, so condensation can accumulate on the walls. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to ventilate the rooms more often or organize a powerful ventilation system;
  4. a thin layer of foil is susceptible to mechanical damage, so it is undesirable to use such a coating in apartments where small children and animals live.

How to choose metallic wallpaper?

As mentioned above, metal wallpaper is a two-layer material, which can be based on:

  • paper;
  • flesilin.

metallic wallpaper selectionNaturally, non-woven wallpaper is more preferable, because they are easier to install and show themselves better in operation, they are more durable and have a higher adhesion to the wall surface.

The outer metal layer can have a specific color, which is applied in one of the following ways:

  • industrial dyeing, in which case you can get almost any desired shade;

  • oxidation – artificial oxidation of the foil surface due to the action of certain reagents. As a result, the coating receives additional protection against corrosion.

metallic wallpaper selectionAfter the dyeing process, the wallpaper can be subjected to decorative processing, during which a pattern is applied to the surface, embossing is performed, or some interesting elements are applied, such as imitation of forged products, etc. In addition, at this stage, blackening or platinization can also take place in order to end up with wallpaper with a unique appearance. Everyone can choose the most suitable option from the many presented, so that the finish fits into the interior as much as possible and meets the design idea.

metallic wallpaper selectionThe peculiarity of metal wallpaper is that it fits well into almost any interior. So, for high-tech, smoother wallpapers with a silver tint are suitable, and in the classics – embossed wallpaper with a golden tint.

When choosing, pay attention not only to the appearance of the product, but also to its packaging. It must be sealed and integral, and the material itself must not be exposed to the effects of surrounding objects, as it is easy to damage it. Metallic wallpapers are sold in rolls, like all other wallpapers, but the thickness of the material is about 1 mm, so the finishing requires the most careful handling.

metallic wallpaper selectionAlso, pay attention to all certificates of quality and safety to be sure that the material will serve you for many years, and at the same time will not harm the health of anyone from the household.

Metallic wallpapers can be used in almost any room, but are best suited for living rooms where they accentuate style and luxury. Designers still do not recommend pasting all walls with such wallpaper: they can be mounted on one wall or used as part of the decoration on each wall. Combining metal wallpaper with other types of finishes is also advisable in order to create a favorable microclimate, because the metallized coating does not allow air to pass through. Such wallpapers go well with other natural types of wall decoration: stone, cork, brickwork, etc.

metallic wallpaper selectionDo not forget that it is important not only to choose the right metal wallpaper, but also to choose the right place for them. So, if the goal is to visually expand the space, then they can be glued to the wall opposite to the light source (window or lamp).

Metal wallpaper is quite an expensive material, since its production is laborious. Don’t buy a cover that is too cheap, as it is unlikely to be of high quality. Better to pay attention to the products of such well-known manufacturers as Tekko and Arte.

How to glue metallic wallpaper?

metal wallpaper gluingAfter choosing and purchasing the material, you must immediately start preparing the surface. Metallic wallpaper is thin enough, so it is not able to mask even the smallest wall defects. That is why you will have to level the surface as carefully as possible. It will be necessary to remove all remnants of the old coating, carefully putty or plaster the wall. If the alignment process seems too time-consuming, then you can make it easier for yourself and use sheets of drywall or plywood for wall cladding. Non-woven wallpaper is even thinner than paper wallpaper and requires a more careful approach.

As for the glue, it is selected depending on what material was used in the base: paper or non-woven. Paper-based wallpaper is smeared with glue, and then mounted on the walls. If a non-woven base is used, then the surface of the walls should be lubricated with glue. The gluing process is no different from the installation of paper or non-woven wallpaper.

metallic wallpaper selectionWhen starting the installation, do not forget to de-energize the apartment, because metal wallpaper conducts electricity perfectly. It is not recommended for safety reasons to turn on electrical appliances until the wallpaper is dry.

Wallpaper cutting is carried out taking into account the measured height of the walls. In addition, it is necessary not to forget about the allowance, as well as the need to compare the pattern, if such is present. You can make markings on the wall: lay the width of the first roll from the corner, draw a vertical line with a laser level. Then a segment of the same width is laid from it, a line is drawn again. In the future, they will help you stick the wallpaper correctly and evenly.

The first strip is glued very carefully, from top to bottom, smoothing with a roller. The second strip is glued end-to-end, matching the pattern. Excess glue is gently wiped off with a sponge.

Finally

Metallic wallpaper is a unique type of decoration that can decorate any room. They add luxury, visually increase space, have good performance and are easy to clean. It is not difficult to choose them: there are wallpapers on sale with a wide variety of patterns and colors. In gluing, they are also simple, and the process is almost no different from the installation of paper or non-woven wallpaper, so almost everyone can cope with this task.
