MacBook Pro 2021 vs. MacBook Pro 2019: These are the differences

3 min

Apple has unveiled a new MacBook Pro 2021. The new generation succeeds the 2019 MacBook Pro. What’s new? And where do the two high-end notebooks differ? We’ll enlighten you.

Design and display: MacBook now with notch

The most noticeable design change in the new MacBook Pro is the notch on the upper screen, which is familiar from iPhones. The notebook’s camera is built into the screen recess. Apart from that, the screen edge of the MacBook is narrower than ever. The display diagonal is accordingly 16.2 inches instead of 16 inches in the predecessor from 2019. There is also a version with 14.2 inches. However, not everyone should be convinced of this design decision. On the other hand, the elimination of the Touch Bar is likely to be more popular. Instead, the new MacBook has conventional function keys again. Apart from that, almost nothing has changed in the silver-gray look with the apple logo on the back, as well as in dimensions and weight.

The new MacBook Pro has a notch in the middle of the top edge of the screen.

Not only the notch is reminiscent of the iPhone on the new MacBook. The new display technology is also known from Apple phones. The Liquid Retina XDR display uses mini LEDs, which provide more brightness. The resolution has also increased slightly to 3,456 x 2,234 pixels (254 ppi). In addition, like the displays of this year’s iPhone generation, the screen has a refresh rate of 120 Hertz.

Processor and memory: Apple chip instead of Intel

The Pro M1 Max provides more power and a longer battery life.

While Intel chips were still used in the 2019 MacBook Pro, Apple uses its own processors in the new generation. Buyers have the choice between the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. The difference between the two chips lies primarily in the GPU, which offers a maximum of 16 cores in the Pro model and a maximum of 32 cores in the Max model. As with the 2019 MacBook Pro, 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of RAM are available.

According to Apple, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip (32-core GPU) and 64 gigabytes of RAM should render 8K videos 2.9 times as fast as the best-equipped 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019. A significant increase in performance. Storage capacities between 512 GB and 8 terabytes are again available.

Other: More connections and more battery

HDMI connection and SDXC card slot are back.

The camera in the MacBook Pro has also been upgraded. It now offers a resolution of 1080p instead of 720p on the 2019 MacBook Pro. In addition, a new image sensor is installed, which should provide better images, especially in poor lighting conditions.

Apple is apparently saying goodbye to the idea of offering as few physical connections as possible with the new MacBook Pro. Instead of just four USB-C Thunderbolt interfaces as in the 2019 MacBook Pro, the new generation not only provides three USB Thunderbolt ports, but also an HDMI port and an SDXC card slot. The audio jack is still there.

The exact battery performance remains – as always with Apple – a secret. However, the new 2021 MacBook Pro should enable 21 hours of video streaming with the Apple TV app. The predecessor only had 11 hours to offer. The new Apple chips are said to be responsible for the additional 10 hours. In addition, the new MacBook Pro has a 140 watt USB-C power plug, which ensures faster charging. The new MacBook should be charged to 50 percent within 30 minutes. The power plug is reconnected to a MagSafe connection – another revival!

Conclusion: Many reasons to buy despite notch

With the new MacBook Pro, Apple is breaking new and old ways. The new display with a high refresh rate and mini-LED technology is a real eye-catcher. The two new Apple processors ensure a significant increase in computing power and twice as long battery life as before. The return of the function keys, the HDMI interface and the SDXC card slot are also positive. The design decision on the notch, on the other hand, is likely to generate divided opinions.
