Curtains cannot be imagined without a curtain rod, which not only holds them, but also plays a huge decorative role. The choice of a particular cornice depends on many factors: the type of curtains, the interior, the color of the walls and furniture, the size of the window opening, etc. The cornice is that detail that is not often paid attention to, but it is he who is able to visually make the window larger if it is hung above the window opening, or if it is longer than the window itself. Today’s market offers a lot of different models of cornices, which differ not only in color and decorative features, but also in the method of fastening, material, etc. It is very difficult to get confused in all this variety, so it is better to study in advance all the possible assortment and understand what is most suitable for your room.
Classification of cornices
Externally, cornices can be completely different: round, baguette, string, tire, etc. All of them have a lot of differences, features and advantages, so they are perfect for each specific situation.
Round cornices. This is the most common and versatile option. In this case, the cornice is a pipe with a diameter of 1-4 cm, very often there is also a second pipe of a smaller diameter – 2-3 mm. The greater the weight of the curtains, the larger the pipe diameter is required. There may be options with a third pipe, but two-pipe are still the most common. One of the bars is for a heavy curtain, the other for a light tulle. Such cornices are made of wood, metal or plastic, they fit perfectly into the classic and many other interiors, are easy to use.
Baguette cornices. This type of curtain rod is distinguished by the fact that there is a special decorative strip covering the entire curtain mounting system, which remains uncovered in the round curtain rod. The plank can be made for gold, silver, repeat the pattern of laminate, parquet, etc. – in stores there are any, even the most daring options in the idea of children’s drawings, interesting ornaments. Spot lighting is often hidden under the same bar, giving the window and curtain zone a special look.
String cornices, instead of a round pipe, use a thin cable to which the curtains are attached. The main advantage of such structures is that they are almost invisible, do not distract attention, and are suitable for any interior style. But you cannot attach heavy curtains to such a cornice, and this must be remembered.
Profile cornices are made of a square aluminum tube that can be bent as you like, getting the most unusual and bizarre shapes. It is with the help of such cornices that arched window openings, multi-level structures, etc. are designed. By the way, such cornices are most often used if you want to complement the window opening with a lambrequin, which is attached with Velcro to the facade of the product.
Rail or tire curtain rods are especially suitable when the window sill is not that wide. They represent a plastic or aluminum guide in which a groove is cut. Hook rollers are inserted into this groove, which quietly and easily slide when you need to open or close the curtain. Such a fastening system is prevented from falling out by special plugs.
For Austrian and Roman curtains, special curtain rods are used, which may differ depending on the way the curtains are raised. So, the most common are open, rope-lifting and closed. For Japanese curtains, a special type of curtain rod is also used, which consists of several rows of panel guides.
- Combined curtain rods can be found when three different types of curtains are combined on the window.
All of the above types of curtain rods may also differ in the material of execution, and most often wood, metal and plastic are used.
Wooden cornices are a classic that fits well into almost all types of interiors, except for those such as modern and high-tech. These are durable beautiful products made of natural wood, and mainly those species that have pronounced longitudinal fibers are used: coniferous, oak, walnut, cherry, etc. Such cornices can most often be found in a single-row design, but there are also double-row ones.
Metalwork is a clear favorite among all types of curtain rods. At first they may seem rustic, but in terms of decorative properties they are not inferior to other materials: you can make stylish beautiful products from them, use forged elements, etc., so metal cornices will successfully fit into absolutely any type of interior. But their main advantage is the ability to withstand curtains of enormous weight: even printed curtains, even a tapestry. But in combination with light tulle, the metal cornice looks very harmonious. A separate place is occupied by forged cornices, which are capable of adding elements of luxury to the interior, and perfectly complement the Baroque and Provence style. Forged cornice can be another element in the ensemble of forged products in the room, or it can be an independent decoration. Such products can be black or white, made under brass, silver or bronze, and to save money, you can choose a cornice with an imitation of forging.
Plastic curtain rods are a cheap alternative to the two previous options. Despite their low price, such products are presented in a huge number of colors and boast a wide choice of designs. They are easy to install and operate, but when buying them, it is worth remembering that light plastic fades faster in the sun, but dark cornices will serve you for many years if you do not hang too heavy curtains on them.
By mounting method
Ceiling cornices are a hit of recent times, as they allow you to visually make the window larger, and even hide some minor defects above the window. Usually, for ceiling cornices, string, rail or rod mounts are used, where curtains are put on: only tulle, tulle and curtains, etc. From above, all fasteners are closed with a baguette with rounded edges, and as a result we get a beautiful design. In the northern regions, such a fastening is also common because it is able to cut off a large amount of cold air entering the house from the street. The decorative strip for the cornice is chosen in the color of the furniture, parquet or ceiling, and the advantage is that when changing the interior, it is easy to replace the strip with another, and the cornice is already fully consistent with the updates.
Wall cornices are used in cases where the ceiling is located much higher than the upper edge of the window opening. In addition, this design is recommended for use in the presence of stretch or suspended ceilings.
By the number of guides and the way of control
As mentioned above, there can be one or more guides in the cornice, and the choice of a particular model depends on which curtains you want to hang. So, for curtains or tulle alone, one guide is enough, if you need to combine them, two. Less common are cornices with three guides, which are also designed for the use of a lambrequin.
According to the control method, the eaves can be manual or electrically driven. If everything is clear with manual ones, and everyone knows how the process of opening curtains occurs, then electric ones are of interest. If the curtains hang high, and they often have to be opened and closed, then it is quite appropriate to equip them with an electric drive: when you press a certain button, the curtains will move apart or move due to the fact that the cable begins to move the carriage with hooks. Many roller blinds are also equipped with an electric drive.
Accessories for eaves
The cornice performs a fixing function, but those elements are also needed that will connect the cornice itself with the curtain canvas. In this case, there are a lot of possible options, and the most common are:
hooks and clips. With their help, it is very easy to attach the curtain to the cornice, and there is no noise during movement;
eyelets – plastic or metal rings at the top of the curtain. It is important that the diameter of the ring is larger than the diameter of the guide itself, so that the curtains can move freely;
the rings with the help of a wide variety of types of fasteners hold onto the curtain fabric, and themselves are strung on a round cornice. When moving, a loud unpleasant sound may occur, so it is better to pay attention to the rubberized options;
the loops are immediately attached to the curtain fabric, so there are no special problems when stringing. The advantage of such an attachment is that it is silent when opening / closing, there is no need to monitor the correct and proportional arrangement of the attachment points every time you put on the curtains.
In addition, it is necessary to select for the cornice and brackets, and if the length of the cornice is more than 2 meters, then it is better to use three brackets. They can be completely different, but you need to choose them for the prevailing interior. You can also purchase tips for the cornice, which will also perform a decorative function if they are made in the form of beautiful balls, butterflies, forged items, etc. The tips are also necessary so that when the curtains are moved along the cornice, they do not accidentally fly off it. By the way, both the cornice and the tips for children’s rooms can be chosen very interesting: with animals, fruits, etc. There are also special handles that help to move and open the curtains, as well as evenly form folds on them.
First of all, it is necessary to clearly determine the length of the eaves: it is possible that it was only slightly larger than the width of the window opening, or you can make it much larger in order to visually erase the borders of the window and make it a little larger. In any case, you need to choose such a cornice so that it is convenient to open the curtains so that convenient access to the window sill and window is maintained.
Certain types of curtain rods will be preferable in a particular interior style. So, for the classics, a metal forged or wooden cornice is suitable, but you can also use baguettes that echo in their design with furniture, wallpaper in the room. String, rail and profile structures fit perfectly into the high-tech interior, and curtains on eyelets are well suited for modern style.
Ethnic style requires the use of natural materials, so only a wooden cornice and the same baguette will be appropriate here. And for oriental interiors that require pomp and luxury in everything, all kinds of cornices with several guides are perfect.
If in doubt that you can choose the “correct” and most suitable cornice, then use ceiling structures.
Do not forget that the type of curtain rod must be correlated with the curtains that you use: only a metal round curtain rod will withstand heavy dense fabrics, and for thin translucent tulle, a string will be more appropriate. For small rooms, it is better to use light translucent curtains and select the appropriate cornice. And lambrequins in a small room are completely inappropriate.
It would seem that the cornice is an almost imperceptible detail in the interior, but its wrong choice can nullify all your other efforts. It is very important that the cornice not only be in harmony with the interior of the room, but also be as functional as possible and corresponding to the selected curtains.
