It is very convenient to place small and constantly necessary kitchen utensils on the wall, and all housewives know this. But the primitive nail driven into the wall is being replaced by more modern devices – roof rails. What are they, and what kind of railing will fit best in your kitchen?
Under the intricate word “rail” is a very simple design. This is a metal rod attached to the wall. You can place ladles, colanders, paper towels, pot lids, even oil bottles and other utensils on it, and perhaps this is due to a variety of attachments.
The first roof rails were used in professional kitchens, but then ordinary housewives also appreciated their convenience. Today roof rails are widely used due to their many advantages:
- the ability to install in the kitchen of any size;
- ease of installation and maintenance;
- low price;
- many additional accessories that increase functionality;
- high structural strength, the ability to withstand large loads.
Railing can become a real decoration of the kitchen, its highlight. It is also worth noting that it can place a sufficient number of necessary items on itself, but at the same time it does not take up space as a cabinet containing the same amount of things.
As for accessories, almost any railing can be equipped with numerous hooks, holders for glasses and towels, dryers, mesh shelves. Thus, the metal bar gains additional functionality, becoming an indispensable element of the kitchen.
Types of roof rails
Different types of roof rails are suitable for different kitchens:
Horizontal ratings are the most familiar and common. They are fixed either in one continuous line along the entire working area of the kitchen, or in several sections, and they can be single-tier or multi-tiered. These roof rails fit perfectly into any kitchen and are often used in small spaces. They are fixed mainly under the kitchen wall cabinets at a distance of 5-7 cm from them.
Vertical rails are not attached to the walls: they are installed on the tabletop or stretched from floor to ceiling. Often these roof rails are used in kitchens with bar counters. Shelves and various supports for kitchen utensils are attached to the crossbeams.
Suspended roof rails tell about their features by the name. They are hung from the ceiling, but they are mainly used in spacious kitchens, as well as where the kitchen-island is installed.
The vast majority of roof rails are made of metal. Commonly used are stainless steel, brass, anodized aluminum, copper. Metal is an ideal material for roof rails, it is durable, withstands high loads, but from all the listed options it is better to choose stainless steel, because it does not corrode and easily cope with high loads, unlike aluminum, which can bend.
Depending on preferences, the metal can be chrome-plated, made in the color of bronze, gold, copper. In this case, all plugs and accessories are selected with exactly the same coating.
Where to place the rail?
Horizontal rails, as already mentioned above, are usually located in the working area above the worktop at a height of about 40-50 cm from it, and the distance to the hanging kitchen cabinets should be 5-7 cm.Even a whole free wall can be taken under the horizontal rails: In this case, the crossbeams are arranged in several tiers, and all kitchen utensils on the rails become a kind of decor item. Often, roof rails are mounted not only in the countertop area, but also above the stove and above the sink.
It must be remembered that under the weight of pots, bottles and other objects, the rail can bend, therefore, its mounts are placed at a distance of no more than 50 cm from each other. A great option for corner kitchens is a right-angled railing. Hanging rail can be hung both above the kitchen island and above the dining table, if it will fit into the interior.
The range of accessories for roof rails is very wide:
hooks. It is difficult to imagine railing without them. Hooks can be used to hang potholders, lids, dishes and much more, depending on the need;
shelves are necessary for placing spices and bottles, household chemicals, sponges, cutting boards on them;
a book holder if you use cookbooks a lot. With such an accessory, the book will not take up space on the work surface and get dirty;
a holder for cling film with a serrated surface will greatly simplify the process of its use;
the knife holder will fit above the working area;
- the holder for the lids can be placed near the stove;
a hanging bar or bottle holder will come in handy for all wine lovers. In addition, you can also use wine glass holders.
When choosing accessories, you must, first of all, think about their functionality, but you should not forget about the appearance either. Correctly selected railing and accessories will make the kitchen not only comfortable, but also cozy, because it is a kind of decor.
Railing and kitchen style
Naturally, every element of the kitchen space should be in harmony with the overall style of the kitchen and with other items in it. Railing is no exception, so when choosing it, you should think carefully about which rail will fit most successfully into the space of a particular kitchen, and whether it will fit at all. There are interiors that can only be spoiled by such a design. These are kitchens in Japanese and minimalist style, because they require the use of a minimum of items so that the maximum space remains free.
In other cases, it is worth examining the features of the chosen style and determining which railing will fit perfectly into it. So, for a kitchen in a retro or classic style, roof rails with a gold finish and carved details are perfect. For hi-tech and techno styles, simple chrome metal rods are suitable, but they should not be overloaded with various accessories and objects. The rails fit perfectly into the country and Provence style: in this case, they can be decorated with potholders and napkins in a cage or flower, wooden spoons, jars of spices.
What else should you consider when choosing a roof rack?
Manufacturers have prepared a lot of different roof rails and accessories for kitchens of any size and configuration. Taking into account the peculiarities of the room, you can choose the most suitable railing.
If the kitchen is small, then the abundance of objects hung on the rail can create a sense of clutter. In this case, it is better to place only the most necessary things on it: potholders, shoulder blades and spices, for example.
If the kitchen is spacious, then you can use a long rail, which will look especially advantageous where a shelf system is used instead of hanging cabinets. In this case, it will be possible to arrange on it all those objects that usually stand on the working surface, freeing it.
For kitchens with a corner sink, you can use a special element that attaches to the rail and becomes a convenient shelf for household chemicals.
- For a short wall, use tiered roof rails.
- Before buying a roof rack, you should think in advance what accessories you need for it and which ones will be superfluous. It is important to find a balance between functionality and neatness of the kitchen space.
Installation of roof rails
Installing the rail in the kitchen is quite simple. It is attached to almost any material, the only exceptions are aprons made of glass.
The first step is to determine the location of the fasteners: mark them with a level and a pencil. Their number directly depends on the length of the railing: for 50-90 cm, two fasteners will be enough, and if the railing is more than a meter in length, then it is better to provide three support points, etc. In general, for safety, it is advised to support the railing with an attachment to the wall every 50 cm.
Now you need to make holes in the marked places. You can use a drill, if the apron is lined with ceramic tiles, it is better to use a diamond-coated drill. When the holes are ready, plastic dowels are mounted in them, self-tapping screws are inserted into the bushings and into the prepared dowels.
The next step is the installation of the railing holders. This is a part with two holes: one for the rail, the other for the bushing. You need to install the holder on the sleeve and fix it with screws. The railing itself is installed in the prepared holders, trying to ensure that its ends are symmetrically located relative to the holders themselves. The rail is also attached with screws. Now the matter is small: it remains to install decorative plugs. They are forgotten in the railing with a wooden hammer handle so as not to damage the coating. After installing the selected accessories, the rail is ready for use.
Railing is a convenient and nice addition to modern kitchens. With its help, you can organize the storage of a lot of things, and at the same time turn the structure into a pretty decor item. It is only important to decide on the type of roof railing, its size and attached accessories. It all depends on the characteristics of the kitchen, the prevailing interior and the requirements of the owners.
