The living room in many apartments becomes the real face of the house, so it is so important to carefully think over its interior, choose the right furniture and arrange it correctly. The hall can play the role of not only a relaxation room, but also turn into a bedroom, study, dressing room and even a dining area. That is why often, in addition to such familiar sofa, TV and coffee table, you need to provide for a lot of other pieces of furniture and equipment. How to arrange them correctly so that the living room is beautiful and functional?
# 1. Preparing a furniture layout plan
First of all, you need to draw up the most detailed layout plan, taking into account each piece of furniture. To do this, you need to know the width, height and length of the living room, all the parameters of door and window openings, it is also necessary to put on the plan the locations of radiators, sockets, indicate in which direction and to what depth all doors open. This can be done both in special programs and on a sheet of paper. Experts recommend choosing a scale of 1:20, and drawing the location of all pieces of furniture not only from the top point, but also depicting each wall separately. Moving furniture on paper is much easier, so it is better to pay maximum attention to this stage.
It is better to start planning the arrangement with the main object in the living room, therefore, it is better to decide on the functional purpose of this room in advance. If there are mainly people to relax, chat and watch TV, then the basis of the room is a soft group. In a small apartment, the living room turns into a bedroom at night: in this case, a folding sofa becomes the main object in it, which must be placed so as to provide maximum comfort to the sleeper. Provide for the presence of a dressing room, work or dining area, if necessary.
When drawing up a plan, you need to take into account the distance between individual pieces of furniture, which is sufficient for comfortable movement. It is 60 cm, and in some cases it is also worth adding the width to which the cabinet doors swing open. It is also worth considering such nuances as chairs sliding out from the table, which should not interfere with the passage in any position, shelves on the wall, which should not prevent the door from opening.
# 2. Methods for arranging furniture in the living room
When drawing up a plan for placing furniture and further actions, it is important to take into account some basic laws of composition. First of all, this is the rule of proportionality, which fully corresponds to the principles of logic: in a small living room, a large sofa or a huge wardrobe will be out of place. If you have nowhere to put your favorite overall piece of furniture, you need to place it away from window and doorways so that it is less conspicuous.
As for the placement of furniture relative to each other, there are several basic principles:
No. 3. Where to put the sofa?
The sofa is the main piece of furniture in the living room. Its size and shape are selected depending on their requirements and preferences, as well as taking into account the area of the living room. There are no strict rules for the location of the sofa in the hall, but several recommendations must be taken into account:
corner sofas are great for small living rooms; it is better to place them near a long wall so as not to visually make the room smaller. For zoning the space of the hall and highlighting its functional zones, you can put a corner sofa not near the wall, but this is an option for fairly spacious halls, incl. combined with the dining area;
a classic sofa can stand both near the wall and in the center of the room, and this depends on many factors. Often sofas of this type are designed for constant transformation into a sleeping place, so it is important to analyze in advance the folding mechanism and how much space the sofa will take when unfolded;
island sofas are arranged in such a way that there should be a free approach to each side of it, so it should be placed away from the walls. This is an option for more or less spacious rooms.
It is better to put the sofa directly in front of the TV for comfortable viewing. A place near the window is not the best option for placement, since access to the window itself is difficult, and the radiator, which in most cases is located in this particular place, will be blocked, which is highly undesirable.
A group of armchairs or poufs can stand next to the sofa, if necessary. It is also worth placing a coffee table near the soft group, the size and design of which can be whatever. The table can also be used as additional storage space.
No. 4. Where to put the TV in the living room?
TV is a must-have thing for a living room, and even if the family watches it a little and rarely, they still plan a place for it. When choosing the optimal location, it is worth considering some recommendations:
- it is better to install the TV where direct sunlight does not shine, otherwise it will be impossible to watch it during the daytime. If there are no other options, then it is worth considering in advance the system for dimming the hall;
- the screen should be located at eye level of a seated person, which is about 1.2 m;
- the TV screen should be located at a comfortable distance from the eyes. To get the minimum value, you need to multiply the diagonal by 3. For example, for a TV with a diagonal of 32 inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm), the safety distance is 2.44 m;
- depending on preferences, the chosen interior style and the availability of space, the TV can be located on a cabinet (it will be an excellent storage place), on a stand, or be hung from the wall. Alternatively, ordinary floor stands can be used as a stand.
No. 5. How to arrange storage locations correctly?
Some living rooms are also dressing rooms, as in many apartments there is no longer any room for storing clothes. The owners of spacious rooms can arrange only a couple of floor pedestals to accommodate all the necessary little things and supplement them with a couple of shelves. Everything is much more complicated if there is not much space, and it must be organized so that everything you need fits, and the living room remains bright and not cluttered, does not resemble a pantry.
Modern designers unanimously advise to abandon traditional walls and opt for other, more airy, but no less spacious options. So, all things with shoes and even some household electrical appliances will fit into a spacious wardrobe – the main thing is to properly organize its space. It is necessary to place it in the living room so that it does not immediately catch the eye of the person entering the room, it is better to leave the rest of the walls as free as possible.
It is better to use a minimum of tall furniture, and leave one of the walls generally empty or only half closed. This could be the wall behind or opposite the sofa. Of the tall furniture, it is better to use only racks, which, together with storage, can perform the function of zoning the space and separate, for example, the recreation area from the office, and all the necessary stationery, books, etc. and will be placed on the shelves of the rack, which at the same time does not become a blank partition.
For small living rooms, they offer a few more tricks in the placement of storage places. So, the sofa can be placed at a short distance from the wall, and behind it, for example, cargo racks, such as kitchen ones, can be placed. The option is acceptable if there is space for the extension of such shelves. In addition, you can use niches in sofas, armchairs and poufs to store some things.
No. 6. Space for additional zones
A compact workplace can be organized in the living room. To do this, you can use a corner computer table, but it is better to place it closer to the window. All the necessary accessories will be located in the shelves of the table, you can use a pair of hanging shelves or the rack mentioned above.
If the living room is combined with the bedroom, then it is better to place the bed away from the entrance to the room, fence it off with a screen, curtain, wardrobe, shelf system. Often the living room also plays the role of a dining room. In this case, it is better to place the dining table at a minimum distance from the kitchen, and furniture, for example, a sofa or an armchair, is optimally suited for zoning.
No. 7. How to place furniture in non-standard living rooms?
When the hall has the shape of a regular square or rectangle, it is easier to plan its space correctly. In most apartments today, unfortunately, there are elements such as the fifth corner, niche, ledges, etc. They are considered to be obvious shortcomings, but if you choose the right furniture and think over its location, then the minuses can be turned into pluses.
So, niches can be used to accommodate cabinets of the appropriate size, and as a result, the space will be used profitably. Also, a niche can be a great place for a sofa, or be decorated with a TV, and the fifth corner can be used to position a corner sofa. If the living room is elongated, then a closet can be placed along the narrow wall.
No. 8. Feng Shui furniture arrangement rules
There are more and more fans of this oriental philosophy, and many are beginning to actively follow its recommendations when arranging the interior. Most of the advice is consistent with ergonomic guidelines. So, if you want to decorate the living room in accordance with Feng Shui, then you should consider the following rules:
- large furniture is not placed near a window or door;
- sofas or armchairs are best positioned so that the seated person faces the window. Sitting with your back to a door or window is undesirable;
- it is better to choose tables without corners;
- the western wall is suitable for the TV, but not opposite the window or doors;
- it is better to give preference to furniture with legs.
Arranging furniture in a living room is an interesting creative process that will definitely bring the desired results in the form of a cozy and functional interior, given a few simple rules. Competent planning, taking into account all the little things and measuring the parameters of the living room down to the centimeter are the main components of success.
